Cupping
How Does Cupping Work?
At St. Petersburg Chiropractic, we typically leave the cups in place for 5-10 minutes. Once the patient is comfortable, we incorporate targeted range-of-motion exercises to allow the muscles and fascia to move beneath the cups. For example, when cups are applied to the lower back, we may have the patient perform cat/cow stretches. For the shoulder, a throwing or pitching motion may be used. These dynamic movements facilitate the release of tension and improve tissue mobility, enhancing the therapeutic effects of cupping.
Is Cupping Safe?
Cupping is a safe and well-established therapy with a long history of clinical use. The procedure may cause temporary discoloration of the skin, typically red or dark purple. It’s important to note that these marks are not bruises but a result of increased circulation and the mobilization of stagnant blood in the treated area. The discoloration is a sign of the therapeutic process, indicating that fresh blood flow is being restored to the tissues. The marks generally resolve within 1 week, with the intensity of the color reflecting the degree of tissue tightness. As healing progresses, the discoloration will gradually lighten.
What Are the Benefits of Cupping?
Cupping therapy is an effective adjunct to chiropractic care, aiding in pain relief, muscle relaxation, and injury recovery. In cases of muscle tightness or strain, cupping helps release fascial adhesions and improves circulation without overstretching the tissue, minimizing the risk of further discomfort. We also use cupping prior to spinal adjustments to relax surrounding musculature, which facilitates joint mobilization and improves the overall effectiveness of the adjustment.
At St. Petersburg Chiropractic, we incorporate cupping as part of our comprehensive treatment approach, particularly for athletes and individuals seeking to optimize their musculoskeletal health.
